Guide Combs Explained — TRANSFORM-U

GUIDE COMBS EXPLAINED

Guide combs are the plastic attachments that clip onto your clipper blade and control exactly how much hair gets cut. Without one, you're cutting down to bare blade length — a few millimetres at most. Snap one on and you've got anywhere from 1.5mm all the way up to 25mm of control. They're what turn a basic clipper into a tool that can handle everything from a buzz cut to a longer styled crop.

TRANSFORM-U offers coloured guide combs to help U differentiate between lengths at a glance — no squinting at moulded numbers when you're mid-cut.

USING MULTIPLE COMBS: THE FADE

A fade is a gradual length transition — shorter at the sides and back, longer toward the top. The same principle applies to all fade styles, whether it's a low fade, mid fade, high fade, or skin fade: multiple combs, stepwise length reduction, blended joins.

How it works

Step down through guard sizes as you move lower on the head. Start at your longest length on top and work progressively shorter toward the sides and back.

Avoid hard lines

Take it slow and steady at the blend zones. Use light, feathering strokes rather than pressing hard and cutting fast. Small overlapping passes with a gentle flick at the end of each stroke will give U a smooth, natural finish every time.

TIPS FOR GETTING IT RIGHT

Always start longer than you think +
You can always take more off — you can't put it back. If you're unsure, start one size up from your target and work your way down.
Go against the grain +
Moving the clipper against the direction of hair growth lifts the hair into the blade properly and gives a more even, consistent result across the whole head.
Blend with overlapping passes +
When transitioning between two guard sizes, work back and forth over the join with a flicking motion at the end of each pass. This softens the line and keeps the blend looking natural.
Make sure the comb is fully seated +
A partially clipped comb can shift mid-cut and leave an uneven patch. Press it in firmly until it clicks and sits flush against the blade.
Clean your combs after each use +
Hair and product build-up between the teeth affects how the comb sits on the blade, which can throw off your cutting length. A quick rinse or brush-out after each session keeps them performing properly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I want a length between two guard sizes? +
Many TRANSFORM-U clippers have a taper lever on the side of the clipper body — this adjusts the blade position to give U fine length control between guard sizes without swapping combs. It's the quickest way to dial in an in-between length. If your clipper doesn't have a taper lever, go with the shorter guard, take your time, and use light passes — a slow, deliberate approach will get you closer to the length you're after without going too far.
How often should I clean my guide combs? +
After every use ideally. Hair and product build-up between the teeth affects how the comb sits on the blade, which can gradually throw off your cutting length without you noticing. A quick brush-out or rinse is all it takes — just make sure they're fully dry before snapping them back on or putting them away.
How do I tell my guide combs apart quickly? +
The number is moulded into each comb, so a quick look will always confirm the size. If U want to make it even easier, TRANSFORM-U also offers colour-coded guide combs — each size has its own distinct colour for instant identification, and they're magnetic so they snap on and off cleanly without any fuss. If you're looking to build out your setup with the right tools, the TRANSFORM-U clipper range is worth a look.
